How to choose the right concrete finish for your needs

Different concrete fishes are available, but how do you choose the right one?

Consider the following factors:

The climate in your area – If you live in an area with harsh weather conditions, you will need a finish that can withstand the elements.
The purpose of the concrete – If you are using concrete for a patio or walkway, you will need a slip-resistant finish.
The look you want to achieve – Do you want a natural look or something more decorative?
The type of project you are working on – A commercial project will have different requirements than a residential project.
Your budget – Some finishes are more expensive than others.

The different types of concrete finish available on the market today

Broom finish – This is the most common type of finish and is achieved by using a broom to texturize the surface of the concrete.
Slate finish – This type of finish is achieved by using a machine to create a textured surface that resembles slate.
Stamped concrete – This type of finish is achieved by stamping a pattern into the surface of the concrete.
Stained concrete – This type of finish is achieved by staining the concrete with various colours.
Polished concrete – This type of finish is achieved by polishing the surface of the concrete to create a shiny, smooth surface.

How to install a concrete finish in your home

Installing a concrete finish will largely depend on the type of finish you are looking to achieve. Below is a general overview of what you will need to do to install a concrete finish in your home:

Gather the necessary tools and materials.
Prepare the surface of the concrete.
Apply the finish to the concrete.
Allow the finish to cure.

Some essential tools to have include; a trowel, a float, a sponge, a brush and a power washer. In addition to these tools, you will also need the finish itself (which can be purchased from most hardware stores) as well as some sealer. Applying a sealer is not always necessary but will help prolong the finish's life.
